Johnny Harold Whisenant 1921 – 2007
Johnny Harold Whisenant was born February 2, 1921 in Park Hill, Oklahoma to Rev. J.M. Whisenant and his wife, Mary Jane (Renfroe) Whisenant. He was the youngest of eight children born to the couple. None of them survive. The Lord took John home with Him on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at the age of 85 years, 11 months, 4 days-just seven months after the loss of his beloved “Gena”.
John received all of his undergraduate education in Oklahoma, attending schools in Tahlequah, Braggs, Mason and graduating from Gore High School in 1939. He also attended Connors Junior College at Warner, Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma University at Norman and the University of Arizona at Flagstaff, AZ. He completed 39 years of teaching in both elementary and high school. He served as teaching principal of Gore High School and in rural neighboring Notchitown, Gum Sprngs and Linder Bend grade schools.
He was inducted into the United States Army in July, 1943 and served in the Pacific area until the end of World War II, returning to Gore in December 1945.
John was married to Virginia Johnston on May 29, 1941 in Warner, OK. The couple lived in Gore for 65 years before Virginia’s death in June 2006.
Three children were born to this union; Johnny Harold Whisenant, Jr. and his wife Joyce of Albuquerque, N.M.; Virginia Eileen Shroff and husband Joe of Bixby, OK; Mary Jane Landin and husband Mark of Tulsa, OK. John is also survived by 4 grandsons, 6 granddaughters, and 7 great grandchildren. They are Dr. Stan Whisenant and wife Krisie of Plano, TX; Major Daniel Whisenant of Redondo Beach, CA; Johnette Fitzgerald and husband Van of Lewisville,TX; Jennifer Wilborn and husband Brent of Carney, OK; Justin Whisenant and wife Ashley of Brooklyn, NY; Jordyn Whisenant of Albuquerque, NM; Desiree’ Abaee and husband Josh; Megan Munoz and husband Chris; Meagan Tripp, Rachel Landin and Eric Landin, all of Tulsa, OK.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed by all his family and many former students. He was an avid golfer, historian, sports enthusiast and a man of integrity.
Services will be held at Gore United Methodist Church on Friday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Eric Snyder officiating. Burial will be at the U.S. National Cemetery in Ft.
