Stinnett, Sylvia Mae
Sylvia Mae Stinnett 1915-2007
Sylvia Mae Stinnett, 91, a longtime Muskogee resident, died Monday night, January 22, 2007, at Tahlequah City Hospital. She was born November 29, 1915 in Russellville, Arkansas to Robert Lee and Minnie (Craig) Smith. Sylvia moved to Sequoyah County where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Sallisaw High School in 1934 where she was Salutatorian. "Pete", as her close friends and family knew her, furthered her education at Northeastern State Teacher's College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in English.
After college Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, John Ortho Stinnett, on December 23, 1938. She taught while the young couple lived in the Claremore area. Following World War II, they made their home in Muskogee. Sylvia stayed home to raise their family, while John pursued a career with the Veterans Administration. Following his retirement, they enjoyed traveling throughout the country in their motorhome.
Mrs. Stinnett joined the First United Methodist Church with her family in 1960. She was a devoted member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and active in the United Methodist Women's Circle. She enjoyed sewing and other arts and crafts. Late in life she began making children's quilts and donated them through the Linus Project. The Linus Project gives quilts to terminally and seriously ill, hospitalized children. She spent countless hours making more than 200 quilts for these precious children.
Mrs. Stinnett was preceded in death by her husband, John Ortho Stinnett, on July 14, 1999, by one brother, Lelis Smith and by two sisters, Vannie Taylor and Glyndean Casady.
She is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Susan Stinnett of Tahlequah; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Mike Pierce of Tucson, Arizona; grandson, John Stinnett, his wife Nikki and their daughter Taylor of Rowlett, Texas; two granddaughters, Cristy Pierce and Linda Pierce, both of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Marie Echols and her husband, Chester of Tahlequah and Nina White of Tulsa; two brothers, Bill Smith and his wife Lee and R.L. Smith and his wife Wanda, both of Sallisaw.
Funeral Services will be 11:30 A.M. Friday, January 26, 2007 in the Chapel of Foster-Petering Funeral Home in Muskogee. Rev. Allen Schneider of Tahlequah First United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. Viewing hours will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 P.M. on Thursday.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
