Amarillo driver triumphs on second night of Modified qualifying

OKTAHA - Racing on Sunday at Outlaw Motor Speedway will be tense, to say the least.

Approximately 50 cars will be racing for the final 12 spots in Modified feature later in the afternoon. The winner of the 40-lap race will take home $5,000.

The green flag falls at 2 p.m.

The first 14 spots were decided in qualifying Friday and Saturday evenings. Seven more will be added to the field today via qualifying. Promoter Danny Womack will add five more cars to the field as wildcards based on performances over the entire weekend.

In the second day of qualifying Saturday night, Alan Sharpensteen played "Pied Piper" in leading the field from start to finish to win the feature. The Amarillo, Texas, driver joins Springfield's Terry Phillips as winners of qualifiers.

The win was not easy for Sharpensteen. He had to battle Oklahoma City's Randy Timms for all but two laps of the 25-lap main event. Timms had the advantage in the turns, but Sharpensteen had the muscle down the straight portion of the three-eighths oval.

The two easily beat Jeff Taylor, Cave City, Ark., and Jason Hughes, Westville, who finished third and fourth respectively.

There were 64 Modifieds on the opening night and 48 on Saturday.

On the points portion of the program, turnabout was fair play in the Economy Modified feature. After finishing second to Jake Kelley in his heat, Dennis Slader led from start to finish to win the 20-lap feature. With the strongest car in the field, the Muskogee driver weathered three restarts to capture his first feature victory of the season.

The final caution - a spin out in turn four on the final lap - set up a green-white-checkered dash to the finish. Patrick Goodnight of Braggs, and Kelley of Glenpool both nudged Slader on the parade-lap restart, but neither had the car to really be a contender.

Goodnight held off Kelley for second with Mike Wroblewski of Muskogee fourth. Shannon Reheard, Muskogee, finished fifth and Charles Bumgarner, Muskogee, was sixth.

Heat 2 – Eddie Martin, Stilwell; Steve Kosiski, Papillion, Neb., Tate Cole, Muskogee; Brandon Gemmill, Ponca City.
