Published May 14, 2008 05:49 pm - Former Haskell mayor gets 10 years in prison WAGONER — Former Haskell Mayor Charley C. Smith, 73, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter. According to police, Smith had been drinking on Oct. 4, 2006, when he caused a collision on Oklahoma 72 in which Coweta chiropractor Dr. Shawn Lee died. Smith entered a blind plea in January and agreed to accept whatever sentence the judge deemed appropriate. Smith could have been sentenced to as little as four years or could have been sentenced to life in prison. The wreck happened at approximately 2 p.m. Police reported that Smith pulled out in front of a tractor-trailer rig, which swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting Lee’s pickup. Lee was killed instantly. An officer reported that “Smith was so unsteady on his feet that he fell face down,” and an empty bottle of vodka was found in his car the night of the accident. Lee was 32 years old. He is survived by a wife and two young children.
