BREAKING NEWS: Man shot by officer near Fourth and Elgin streets

One person was shot by a Muskogee Police officer near Fourth and Elgin streets shortly after noon Thursday.

Muskogee Police Cpl. Michael Mahan said officers pulled over a vehicle that was suspected of being stolen.

After the officers made the stop, a passenger in the blue Ford Escort, got out, struggled with the officer and tried to disarm the officer by attempting to remove his gun from the holster, Mahan said.

The other officer shot the suspect. It was not clear whether passenger or driver was shot.

The suspect has a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service spokeswoman Rebecca Williamson. He was taken to EASTAR Health System with a life-threatening injury.

Initial reports of an officer being shot were incorrect.
