Deadline for filing May 11 in settlement case

— A class-action settlement for African-Americans who experienced farm loan discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is entering its final phase. African-Americans who farmed or attempted to farm may be eligible for a sizable cash payment or loan forgiveness from the $1.25 billion class-action settlement. The final phase of the Black Farmers Discrimination Settlement is only for people who tried to file a late claim in the original Pigford case. The deadline for filing a claim is May 11.

Lawyers appointed by the court are conducting meetings around the country to help those who are included in the settlement file their claims. The assistance is free. Completing a claim may take some time, so those who think they are included should get more information now.
