Childish — that best describes the person or persons who last week uprooted one of the new stop signs along Kimberlea Drive and tossed it in a yard.
Some residents along the drive complained last month that drivers frequently sped down the street that connects York Street and Country Club Road north of Shawnee Bypass. The Police Department verified that a high percentage of drivers exceeded the speed limit along Kimberlea, and Public Works added stop signs at Beth Ann Drive in an effort to slow them.
The residents were worried about the safety of their children and people walking in the street for exercise and recreation.
Children and people shouldn’t be playing in the street, of course, but people do cross streets and use them, too, for a variety of purposes. People ride bicycles in streets, and drivers should show caution and above all, obey the speed limit.
Speed limits are established for everyone’s safety, not to aggravate drivers.
Obey the law — and leave the signs alone. Taking down stop signs invites accidents, and is not an acceptable protest.
