Published May 21, 2008 05:31 pm - Not many people have earned the respect and admiration from the community that Dr. Matthews realized in his lifetime. The consummate citizen He was the consummate citizen, and he will be missed.
Dr. Virgil D. Matthews died Monday at 89. A city obstetrician, he delivered more than 8,000 babies during his career. But he did much, much more. He served on the Muskogee School Board for 32 years and was a founding member of the Muskogee Public School Foundation. He also served on the Muskogee City Council. And up to his death, Dr. Matthews was the medical director of the Muskogee County Health Department. He was seeing indigent patients in the clinic at the department. Service today
