Thank mom for the roles she played

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant is one of the best basketball players on the planet.

Durant was selected Most Valuable Player of the 2013-2014 National Basketball Association season last week.

It is a prestigious honor and one that Durant deserved.

Durant thanked his mother for being the real MVP.

He thanked her for the sacrifices she made as he grew up. He recognized that his mother went to bed hungry in order to make sure he and his brother had enough to eat.

Durant’s acceptance speech was widely distributed throughout social media. Do yourself a favor and find it and watch it.

His speech honored not only his mother but should remind us all to thank our mothers, too.

On this Mother’s Day, we should be thankful for the sacrifices our mothers made for us.

As if giving us life was not enough, mothers:

• Were our No. 1 cheerleaders. They were proud of our successes and were there to comfort us in our failures.

• Were our taskmasters. They made sure we did our homework and chores. That’s one way we learned responsibility and the value of a job done well.

• Were our consciences. They taught us compassion and empathy.

• Were our best friends growing up. They were fun. They were our first playmates. They had fake tea parties and learned to throw footballs and baseballs.

• Were our best audiences. They laughed at all our jokes and gave us confidence that we were special.

• Were our first loves. They taught us unconditional love. They taught us what it means to be loved and how to love others.

They did all these things throughout our lives. And they really did not ask for all that much in return.

Tell your mom you love her today.
