There are a lot of people out there who want what you’ve got. And they have a number of devious ways to try to get it.
Seniors are often a target of these scammers. A recent Oklahoma Insurance Department conference offered information on recognizing fraud and reporting it.
State Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak said, “Senior fraud is so rampant, and they are trying to get to seniors through their pocketbook, through the Internet, through their mailbox, through their friends, through seminars.”
He hopes those who attend the conference become advocates who talk to their churches and civic groups about the issue. So do we.
Don’t be afraid, be aware.
Regard unsolicited contacts with caution.
Be wary of any call where someone asks for financial information, especially if they claim to be connected with the account. The bank or your credit card issuer would already have your information.
If someone claims to know you or be a family member, verify his or her claim.
And, of course, if an offer seems to good to be true, it is.
If you think you have been targeted, report it. You may keep someone else from falling victim.
