Veterans need you in driver’s seat

Muskogee-area veterans need you.

Disabled American Veterans volunteers drive veterans who can’t drive themselves or don’t have the funds available to get to their appointments.

But the group is  down to one volunteer driver here.

The drivers are needed for both local trips and for journeys to Oklahoma City and back.

Misty Summers, Hospital Service coordinator and a driver for Disabled American Veterans, said that volunteering is a way to give back to veterans.

“They have given so much for us, I think it’s really important that we give back as much as we can,” Summers said.

Requirements to be a volunteer driver include a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Drivers must also pass a physical.

Though volunteers choose the days and times they will be available, the work can be demanding.

“It’s usually a 10-hour day, starts at 7 a.m. and you’re not off until 4:30 or 5,” Summers said.

“It’s all worth it. It does your heart so good to give back to the veterans,” Summers said.

So, this is a volunteer job that requires a real commitment. But veterans have given so much, the sacrifice has been more than earned.

And the experience is rewarding as well. Summers says she has formed friendships with the veterans she drives.

“We develop a bond,” Summers said. “It’s hard not to. We are on a first-name basis.”

If you have the time and ability, the DAV and the veterans the group serves need your help.

Please give it.
