Historic district a great idea

— A historic district may be revitalized in the near future.

A request to designate a northwest Muskogee neighborhood as a local historic district is being considered. The area, which will be known as the “Y Historic District,” once was a bustling economic center dominated by businesses owned by members of the black community.

Margaret McIntosh-Taylor, who requested the designation, said her dream is to revive what once was the second-largest black business district in Muskogee. She plans to do that by establishing the area as an arts and cultural district that celebrates Muskogee’s history.

She said the area was “booming” back in the ’50s and ’60s.

“It’s going to take some time (to see this transformation take shape), but this designation opens the door for grant opportunities or other funding for future projects,” she said.

This is a great idea which we hope comes to fruition.

Muskogee citizens will do well to honor and remember the past as we build our future.

It would be great to see that district booming again. It will take some work, but it could happen.
