Vote yes on both propositions

Muskogee voters should vote yes on two propositions on Tuesday’s ballot.

Proposition 1 authorizes the extension of a 0.32 percent sales tax, which would provide funding for state-mandated improvements to the city of Muskogee’s aging sewage system.

Proposition 2 would authorize a five-year extension of a 0.18 percent sales tax, which would provide funding a number of projects designed to “make Muskogee a better place to live, work and visit.”

It is critically important for voters to realize these are not tax increases — they are extensions of existing taxes.

It also is critically important for voters to realize that funding the sewage system improvements is not really an option.

The city of Muskogee is under a consent order by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

That means the city must make the necessary improvements. That means the city must find the funding.

Taxpayers must pay for the improvements one way or another.

We have the funding in place to make the improvements.

Voter must extend it by voting yes on Proposition 1.

Proposition 2 involves several items in support of our firefighters, police officers and citizens.

Proposition 2 has something for the benefit of every citizen in Muskogee.

Both propositions will improve our city.

Neither will raise the burden on taxpayers.

Vote yes on both this Tuesday.
