Poverty program needs help

— Muskogee’s ongoing problem with poverty requires attention.

There is a group of very good people trying to help create a pathway for those in poverty to find their way out.

For “Bridges Out of Poverty” to be successful, it needs the dedicated work of those within the program.

The program, administrated by Community Circles of Muskogee, is not designed as any kind of a handout or entitlement.

It is designed to help those who want to help themselves.

There is hard work and dedication needed from those in the program.

One of the first classes in the Bridges program is called “Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting-By World.”

That class has been so successful that a waiting list exists for the next class in August.

“Once word begins to spread, people want to go through the program,” said Tom Martindale, Community Circles of Muskogee’s coordinator.

However, the program needs more allies — those people who provide program graduates with post-class support.

For Muskogee to help those in poverty lift their way to a better life, those with a better life must be willing to help.

It’s not a financial commitment. It’s time and energy.

For Muskogee to grow, it needs a way to break the cycle of poverty for many in our community.

An opportunity exists for you to help.

Please do.
