Thank you to a public servant

Muskogee County will lose a dedicated, caring man who has devoted his life to public service when Gene Wallace steps down at the end of the year.

Wallace will have served four terms as Muskogee County District 1 commissioner.

If you have met Wallace, you know he is warm and attentive. It is clear he cares about people and genuinely wants to help. He has a servant heart.

Wallace says he has a number of projects he wants to finish before he leaves.

“We are not going to coast to the end,” Wallace said. “We will work as hard today as we did 16 years ago.”

That is hard indeed.

Wallace has not just served District 1. He has served on multiple regional and state boards, rural water boards and as a volunteer fire chief. He is a man who stays very busy doing things that help others.

Wallace has never hesitated to wade into the hard and often messy business of trying to make the world a better place.

We expect those we elect to perform the duties of the office. Wallace has cared and worked for the public far beyond the scope of the job to which he was elected.

We can only hope Muskogee County is so blessed as to find another so committed to public service.

Thank you, Gene Wallace.

You have been a credit to this county and its people. May you be blessed in all you do. You have certainly been a blessing to us.
