Applause for Girl Scout’s ‘gold’ project

An area Girl Scout’s community project will make Hilldale Public Schools students safer.

Destany Cornejo, an Oktaha High School senior, played an instrumental role in getting school zone signs posted in the Hilldale Public School District.

It was something she noticed two years ago while attending Hilldale High School during her driver’s education training.

What’s perplexing is why it took so long for anyone else to notice proper school zone signs weren’t posted in the Hilldale Public School District.

Because the school district used to lie outside Muskogee’s municipal boundaries, traffic signals for the school district never had been installed. That oversight was rectified after Cornejo brought the situation to the attention of city administrators.

Cornejo completed the project for her Girl Scouts Gold Award. The award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. She will be recognized April 26, when the awarded will be  presented to her.

It’s refreshing when students such as Cornejo get involved in government. It shows that our future can be in great hands.

This young woman deserves our applause, and serves as a reminder that just one person can make a change in our city.
