Lake Eufaula Poker Run offers fun, cash
EUFAULA — When you think of poker, you may not think of sun, water, and boats, but the Lake Eufaula Lake Association’s Golden Eagle Poker Run is that and much more, according to organizers.
“This Poker Run is unique in that it all takes place on the water,” said Joe Ward, director of the LEA. “All you need is a boat and a bathing suit. You can even ride your jet ski.”
The party on the lake begins on June 16 with participants registering at Zackary’s Bar & Grill in Eufaula Cove. You can enter between 8 a.m. and noon, but you can save $25, if you pre-register by June 15.
Entrants navigate from marina to marina to pick up their cards. Plastic bags with a Golden Eagle Poker Run T-shirt, directions to each marina and emergency numbers are provided to each entrant and also serve as a place to keep envelopes safe from the water.
Marinas included on the trip itinerary include Eufaula Cove, No. 9, Belle Starr and Cole’s Evergreen.
The real party begins on the deck at Zackary’s as you wait for winners to be announced.
The announcer keeps the crowd pumped with the opening of each entrant’s cards.
There are several ways to win — including having no hand at all.
“If you don’t even get so much as a pair, we put your name into a hopper and draw three of them out for $500 each,” Ward said.
This year’s winner could take home over $19,000, with other cash prizes of $9,625 for second, $6,125 for third, $3,500 for fourth and $1,725 for fifth (based on 500 entries).
Following the event, there will be a live band.
