Published November 04, 2009 03:22 pm - Muskogee woman chairs ceremony and gala Cassandra Gaines joined the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame board of directors on Oct. 9 and co-chaired the hall’s 21st annual induction ceremony and gala on Oct. 21.
Gaines’ passion for jazz and its roots led her to the hall where she serves on the induction and preservation committee, according to a media release. Recognizing her dedication, the committee appointed Gaines as co-chair of the 21st annual ceremony and gala and recommended that she be nominated as a candidate for the board of directors. When asked about Gaines, Sen. Maxine Horner (retired), founder of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame said “we are so excited that Gaines’ plate is not too full to include the Jazz Hall. She’s a real asset to this organization and many others. We are grateful for her concern for the preservation of jazz and recognition of Oklahoma musicians in the fields of jazz, gospel and blues. ” Gaines was honored by OJHF in 2002 for her outstanding community service in Muskogee and other parts of Oklahoma when she was presented the Maxine Cissel Horner Spirit of Community Excellence Award – the second person after Horner to receive this award.
