The Saturday Night Spotlight will shine again this weekend at 7 p.m. Saturday at the historical Roxy Theater. Cost is $5 and free to children 12 and under.
The show will feature a variety of vocalists and styles. It has become the expectation of the audience to hear a variety — they seem to celebrate the unexpected. However surprising the show may be at times, it is always entertaining.
Among the eight performers is Anna Massey, 11, of Tulsa. Anna has been on the spotlight stage several times over the last 13 months, and always walks away satisfied as a performer. Her mother, Missy Massey, says that the program at The Roxy has such a warm and comfortable atmosphere that it allows the performer the opportunity to take chances, to explore new music without fear of rejection.
“Anna feels like she is with family when she sings at The Roxy,” her mother said.
As a developing entertainer, you process your experience with each song to find your strength. Anna said she always can count on the audience for feedback. Though it is always friendly, she knows what has worked best. Anna has performed for many years, and has recorded a CD of some of her favorite songs. The CD showcases Anna when she was a couple years younger, and it is from the heart. She was always very close to her grandfather and though she was 3 years old when he passed away, they created a bond that is timeless and will last forever. It is his inspiration Anna carries with her on stage and in her daily life. Her CD shares her dedication to him lovingly in the liner notes.
The idea of “goodness” does not stop with her music, it is also a part of her personal life. When she recently celebrated her 11th birthday, she received many gifts from friends and family, Anna had requested no gifts. She just wanted to celebrate with friends.
