Published November 20, 2008 06:42 pm - It’s good to be ‘King’ Fort Gibson group to put on classic play By Travina Coleman Phoenix Staff Writer Kyle Randolph, 18, said he loves being the king, and the harem isn’t bad either.
OK, he’s not really a king. But he does play one on stage in Fort Gibson’s “The King and I.” “King’s pretty dominant,” Randolph said. “He is the exact opposite of me. Ms. Wicks helps us push the limits so we can handle demanding roles.” Melanie Wicks is new to Fort Gibson but not to the art of performing theater. Wicks, the director, is the newest member to the Tiger Theatre Co. and has chosen Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” for the company’s fall all-school musical. The show opens at 7 p.m. today and runs to Sunday in the high school auditorium. “I think it’s a wonderful piece,” she said. “We are adding something new to the experience by adding an orchestra. They’ve never had one and it just adds to the experience.” Wicks said the orchestra is made up of student musicians and members of the community. “It’s a wonderful way to get the community involved,” she said. “And it’s good for the students to get a more professional experience.” The story begins when Anna Owens, played by Tawny Easterling, arrives in Thailand to teach the royal children English. The meeting with the king, played by Randolph, immediately falls short when Anna learns she has to live in the palace and not in her own home as originally promised. “The King and I” is the theatrical version of the book, “Anna and the King of Siam,” a book written by Margaret Landon based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, a teacher from England who lived from 1831 to 1915 and taught the royal children of Siam. Susan Phares plays Eliza. “We have been rehearsing for a long time and we are ready,” she said. “I am sure the show day will be jittery. It should be great.” Easterling said this role is the most challenging because of the wide range of emotions needed to pull off the character. “It’s been a blast, watching how we change as actors and actresses,” she said.
