Published November 21, 2008 05:58 pm - Church starts, stays humble By Travina Coleman Phoenix Staff Writer Scratched and worn with a lot of character, the pews at Church on the Go are much like the congregation.
Pastor Loren Welch of Muskogee said that’s the way he likes it. Crystal Murry, 30, of Muskogee said Church on the Go has changed her life. “I have been attending since before we had the church building,” she said. “It has helped turn my life and my husband’s life around. The church has been there for us through some really tough times. I feel really connected when Loren preaches. It’s like he’s talking directly to me; he hits on something that I have been through. I have been to several churches before and I have never felt comfortable and welcome. But here I do.” Church on the Go is located at 327 Eastside Blvd., a location Welch said he feels is ideal for his ministry. “We are here to pick up the single mothers, the single fathers, and the ones trying to fight a drug problem. They are who we want to reach.” Welch began his church with his wife, Clara, in January 2005, in their small apartment. “We had so many people tell us that if Loren had a church, they would go,” she said. “We started with six people, and some hadn’t been to church in 30 or 40 years.” Slowly after that, they found the store-front building they operate out of now. “We have seen several lives turn around,” she said. “There was a couple who was on drugs for years and now they are clean, working and doing well. We are thrilled to help just one family, but it’s been a blessing.” Welch said he is an imperfect pastor who serves a perfect God. “Nobody is perfect,” he said. “I want the people nobody has bothered to stop and pick up.” There are five members on the non-denominational church board including Rhenda and John Staton. John Staton built the church’s altar and cross. “I knew we needed an altar,” he said. “I found a log in a creek, and it just seemed right. I drug it out of the creek and went to work on it. It was a powerful experience. It was a fallen tree left over from the ice storm.”
