Remodeled home to be featured on this year’s holiday tour

TAHLEQUAH — The restored and remodeled home of Ken and Margot Purdy will be included on this year’s AAUW Homes for the Holidays tour from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Dec. 14.

The Purdy home at 310 West Keetoowah was built in 1907 by Edward Hicks, a prominent turn-of-the-century Tahlequah businessman, for his daughter. Hicks is credited with bringing the first telephone system to Indian Territory.

The home passed hands several times through the years before falling into serious disrepair by the late 1970s. The present homeowners, Ken and Margot Purdy, purchased the home in 1983, just ahead of the wrecking ball.

Do-it-yourself remodeling and restoration projects occurred slowly over many years, punctuated by two major home additions undertaken with professional help. The original 1907 footprint of the home was roughly 1,200 square feet. Today, the home has about 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms and three baths. White trim and brick-red shutters accent this brown-colored frame home.

In 2001, the Purdys added a brick ramp to the front entrance to make it wheelchair accessible for disabled relatives.

The home’s traditional decor is an eclectic mix of antiques, family heirlooms and flea market finds. Ken’s father, uncle and grandfather ran Purdy’s Sport Shop in Tahlequah for many years, and Ken’s study has hunting and fishing relics and memorabilia from the old store.

Today, the old house makes a comfortable home for the busy lives of two working parents and two teenage boys. The convenient location makes it easy for Ken to fulfill his duties as mayor of Tahlequah.

This year’s Homes For The Holidays is honoring Northeastern State University’s Centennial. A reception will be held in NSU’s Seminary Hall to commemorate the transition from the Cherokee National Female Seminary to Northeastern State Normal School on March 6, 1909.

Guests may purchase treats at the Goodie Shoppe, located in the home of Don and Susanne Betz, 526 Seminary, on the NSU campus.

The seventh in a series of numbered, collectible Christmas ornaments also will be available at the Betz home and at NSU’s Seminary Hall. Proceeds from the ticket sales support the AAUW Educational Foundation, one of the world’s largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women.

Proceeds from the Goodie Shoppe and ornament sales will be used for AAUW Tahlequah Branch projects. One of these projects is the mentor program in Adair County led by AAUW member, Patsy Morton.

Five years ago, AAUW members started working with eighth-grade girls who are now seniors at Watts School. This year, the mentors are interacting with the eighth-grade girls at Bell and Maryetta Schools.

AAUW membership is open to all who qualify by holding an associate’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

For membership information, contact Amy Aldridge Sanford, 444-3608, or e-mail aldridgea@nsuok.edu. For information about the tour, contact Lela Stowers, 456-3483; Irene Wickham, 456-5584; Bertie Carter, 456-4282; or any AAUW member.
