The Christmas tree in “the cottage” can be seen clearly through its window at the home of Greg and Linda Gaither. Their home will be on the Christmas Home Tour.

‘The cottage’ grows

By Travina Coleman
Features Writer

Linda Gaither and her husband, Greg, just wanted a large garage at their home, 3200 Cherry Place. Instead, it turned into much more than that.

The Gaithers call their newest addition “the cottage.”

“We have six grandchildren and three sons-in-law,” Linda said. “It just took a life of its own. We wanted it to be a place to have fun. Then the plan evolved.”

Pulling up to the Gaither home, the cottage stands like a replica of their first home built around 20 years ago.

“We are remodeling it right now,” she said. “We lived here for nine months, when the ice storm hit.”

The Gaithers opened their home up for the 34th annual Christmas Home Tour, because it was for a good cause.

“Donna (Taylor) really liked the cottage,” Linda said. “I can’t think of better reason to open a home.”

Walking through the door, the cozy and lofty cottage boasts a lot of memorable items the Gaithers share.

At first glance through the door, a flight of stairs greets you, with a painting of Linda done when she was 16 by artist George Grecco, the man who did the large roughneck statue in front of the Tulsa Expo Square.

Immediately to the left, the “lodge room” is filled with a classically decorated tree in front of the window and Santa hats on the deer and other wildlife that now call the walls home.

“These are my husband’s babies,” she said.

Further into the downstairs, a bathroom and a wet bar area complete the floor plan.

“I have some help from my friend who has an eye for decorating,” Linda said. “Her name is Toni Grossardt. She is a wonderful friend.”

Sitting on the bar-style table is a cotton Santa Claus that belonged to Greg when he was 4 years old. Near the ornament is a 1974 copy of the tale, “The Night Before Christmas.”

“We read this book to our girls when they were young,” Linda said. “I am not much of a keeper of things, they have to hold a specific meaning for me. Otherwise I just get rid of it.”
