Murrell Home open Sunday

PARK HILL — Due to the recent inclement weather, the 1907 Oklahoma Centennial Open House at the Murrell Home Historic Site has been rescheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Visitors are invited to tour the 1845 mansion and learn about Christmas customs from the Edwardian period. The halls will be decked in Christmas fashions of the early 20th century.

During the event, titled “A Centennial Christmas,” fashions from 1907 will be seen throughout the house, and visitors will enjoy music from the early 20th century. Scrapbooks made during the same era from merchant catalogs reused and pasted into elaborate memorabilia collections also will be on display.

Authors Terri M. Baker and Connie Oliver Henshaw will be on hand to sign copies of their recently published book, “Women Who Pioneered Oklahoma: Stories from the WPA Narratives.” The Oklahoma University Press publication is a collection of selected women’s interviews conducted in 1936-37 from the Oklahoma Indian Pioneer Papers. The book relates the Oklahoma pioneer experience directly from accounts by women of different racial, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds.

“Father Christmas,” dressed in traditional costume, will be present for the festivities. A photographer will take pictures with Father Christmas, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Murrell Home.

The historic Murrell Home is undergoing a major exterior roof restoration. Guests will be able to view the progress being made toward restoring the home’s historical façade.

Admission to the Centennial Open House is free.

For more information, contact the Murrell Home at 456-2751 or murrellhome@okhistory. org.
