Williams tribute to help Red Cross

As a tribute to the late Hank Williams Sr., a concert is planned that will also benefit the local Red Cross, according to a media release.

Thursday will mark the 64th anniversary of Williams’ historic performance in Muskogee. He made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry on June 11, 1949, and his very next concert was in the Muskogee Municipal Building Auditorium.

As a tribute, Hankerin’4 Hank will be performing at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Roxy Theatre. The concert will be the same price as when Hank performed back in 1949 ($1 per person and 10 cents for pop and popcorn). Proceeds from the concert will benefit the local American Red Cross Hero Campaign, so monetary donations will be accepted at the door as well. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and entry to the event is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The American Red Cross Hero Campaign has a goal of $50,000. That money will help fund local disaster relief efforts (fires, floods, tornadoes, etc.), Services to Armed Forces (SAF), and preparedness education in Muskogee, Cherokee and Adair counties. From July to April, the Red Cross has provided $55,253.86 to 103 families (302 individuals) recovering from disasters, sent 76 communications to get soldiers home for family emergencies, and reached 10,889 people with preparedness information, the release states.
