Mentors set to get state recognition

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and its David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative are encouraging youth mentoring organizations across the state to submit their 2013 outstanding mentors for recognition as part of Oklahoma Mentor Day at the Capitol, to be held Jan. 15.

“The goal of Oklahoma Mentor Day is to recognize outstanding mentors from all types of youth mentoring organizations around the state and to provide fun, educational activities for the honorees and their mentees to share,” Beverly Woodrome, director of the Boren Mentoring Initiative, said in a media release. “Mentor Day also draws attention to the value of mentoring and the tremendous impact that mentors make in their mentees’ lives.”

Outstanding Mentor submission forms are available online at www.okmentors.org. Forms are due by Dec. 16. To participate, mentoring organizations must be registered as members of the Boren Mentoring Initiative’s statewide network. Organizations not currently listed in the network can join at no cost at www.okmentors.org. Mentoring organizations may include school-based, faith-based, corporate programs, colleges and career-techs, or community nonprofits.

The foundation launched the David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative in 2006 to promote the growth and development of quality youth mentoring programs statewide.

Named for foundation founder and chairman David L. Boren and his wife, Molly, the initiative grew out of Boren’s own commitment to mentoring and the impact that mentoring can have on a student’s success in and out of the classroom.
