AAUW

The AAUW Tahlequah Branch met at noon Friday at the Help-In-Crisis office, 205 N. College Ave., Tahlequah. Margaret Cook, Executive Director, presented the services Help-In-Crisis offers, some of the common misconceptions about victims of domestic violence, and ways individuals or groups in the community can assist the agency in meeting victim’s needs.

Cook has been with Help-In-Crisis since 1998 in various capacities and stepped in to the directorship position in January 2013 after completing her law degree.

Help-In-Crisis aids victims of domestic violence and their children, rape victims, incest survivors, and potential suicide victims. It offers assistance in Adair, Cherokee, Wagoner, and Sequoyah Counties. These services include: Domestic Violence Shelters, 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, Court Advocacy, Sexual Assault Services, Sexual Assault Prevention, Child Abuse Prevention Counseling, Supervised Visitation, Positive Choices Batterer’s Intervention Program, and a Children’s Advocacy Center.

The Encore Resale Shop, which opened in 2009, sells gently-used donated items. This store provides revenue for Help-In-Crisis programs as well as sales tax revenue for the community. By volunteering in the store, women in the HIC shelter have the opportunity to learn retail and marketing skills to help them obtain employment once they leave. Women and children in the shelter are given vouchers for the items they need to start a new life.

Anyone interested in the program or in joining AAUW is invited to attend the club’s meetings. AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Student affiliation is open to anyone who does not already hold an undergraduate degree and is enrolled in a two-or four-year regionally accredited educational institution. Because Northeastern State University is an AAUW College/University Partner Member, students may receive a free e-Student affiliation.
