Methodist Women to hold book review

The United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church will hold its annual Book Review and Bake and Book Sale on Friday. The Bake and Book Sale will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the book review will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by a reception.

Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door or from any UMW  member.

This is the only fundraiser for the UMW  for the year, and proceeds go to local mission projects. Everyone is invited.

Martha Tuteral will review the book “Laugh Your Way to Grace,” by Rev. Susan Sparks, America’s only female stand-up comedian with a pulpit, according to a media release. She is senior pastor of the historic Madison Avenue Baptist Church in New York City (the first female pastor in its 160-year history). She has been featured on ABC, PBS and CNN, as well as having been featured in Oprah Magazine, on Naomi Judd’s show on the Hallmark Channel, in the New York Times and in numerous comedy clubs.

She also is the recipient of an award from Intersections International for her interfaith work to promote justice, reconciliation and peace among diverse communities. Her book has been called one of the best spiritual books of the year.

Tuteral has been a member of First United since 1958 and has been reviewing books to various groups in the area for more than 35 years. She chose this particular book because it is a personal and funny look at humor as a spiritual practice. She invites you to join her as the author presents a convincing case of how we can reclaim the forgotten legacy of humor found in our spiritual history.
