Cherokee Market picks Best in Show

TULSA — This year’s eighth annual Cherokee Art Market honored Alvin Marshall with Best of Show for “A Little Girl’s Dream” sculpture entry at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

The awards reception held recently honored the Cherokee Art Market prizewinners with $75,000 overall prize money awarded across 20 categories.

“The Cherokee Art Market continues to be one of the most competitive events with one of the largest prize purses of any Native American art show in the country,” Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker said in a media release. “Thousands of people will view the outstanding work created by these talented artists from across the country, and some will have a chance to take their favorite piece home.”

The show featured art from more than 150 Native American artists from across the nation.

With nearly 60 winners in eight classes, the following highlights the Cherokee Art Market 2013 Best of Show and Best of Class winners:

 Best of Show — Alvin Marshall, “A Little Girl’s Dream.”

Class 1, Painting, Best of Class — Tony A. Tiger, “Essence of Being.”

Class 2, Sculpture, Best of Class — Alvin Marshall, “A Little Girl’s Dream.”

Class 3, Beadwork/Quillwork, Best of Class — Jackie Larson Bread, “Amsakappii Prikonni.”

Class 4, Basketry, Best of Class — Shawna Cain, “Reclaiming Our Sacred Symbol.”

Class 5, Pottery, Best of Class — Chase Kahwinhat Earles, “Red River Bowl.”

Class 6, Textiles, Best of Class — Margaret Roach Wheeler, “The Story of Mahota.”

Class 7, Jewelry, Best of Class — Antonio Grant, “Spirit Keeper.”

Class 8, Diverse Art Forms, Best of Class — David Scott, “Fishing at Night.”
