More True Grit-themed programs set for library

Muskogee Public Library and Eastern Oklahoma District Library System have been celebrating since the beginning of this year, and the celebration will continue until the end of June.

We’ve had “Afternoon Tea with Alice Robertson” and “Show Your True Grit Open Mic Night” in the past, and May promises to bring some more thrilling True Grit themed programming.

The first being a reminder that the True Grit Wellness Challenge is still rolling on.

There’s still time to sign up and take the challenge of completing Mattie Ross’ 450-mile journey before the June 30 deadline.

The challenge is separated into two categories: fitness activities and wellness activities.

Those participating in the challenge can earn “miles” that might not only be physical activity, but by choosing healthier living options (such as quitting smoking and eating more fruits and veggies) as well.

At 2 p.m. May 17, MPL will be celebrating True Grit and Mother’s Day in style with America’s first “mother,” Martha Washington.

Nancy Calhoun will be performing a monologue depicting the life of our first president’s famous wife.

Tea and finger foods will be served during the event, and guests are welcome to dress for the occasion.

Haven’t had a chance to discuss the book yet?

We’ll be holding the third installment of the Brown Bag Book Discussion series at noon on May 20.

Those who are interested in attending are welcome to bring a lunch or snack to enjoy as we discuss Mattie’s quest to find her father’s killer.

Local Author Gary Babb will be presenting Aliens & Politics: How (and Why) I Write at 2 p.m. May 24.

In a laid-back, easy-going style, Babb will offer his thoughts, insights and stories on the craft of writing.

Whether it’s a question of how to get started, how to get published, or where to go next, Gary’s experiences will enlighten and entertain.

At 6:30 p.m. May 29, we will be visited by Judge Parker and his wife and go on a virtual tour of the “hanging” judge’s courtroom.

Enjoy a root-beer float and snacks as you learn about their experiences during the time period of True Grit.

This event will also serve as the kick-off event of the adult summer reading program, Literary Elements.

We hope you’re able to join us as we continue our celebration of one of the most beloved novels of all time.

We thank you for your support of Muskogee Public Library and EODLS and encourage you to check out our new calendar of events at www.eok.lib.ok.us.
