Hot rods to drag in cash for clinic

Two things that Ronnie Brassfield said he loves are hot rods and good causes.

The 16th annual Cruis’n Angels and BancFirst Car Show will have both.

“We use our cars because that’s our passion,” said Brassfield, Cruis’n Angels’ vice president.

The car show will take place this weekend in downtown Muskogee. Last year the benefit set a record, raising $11,500 for the Good Shepherd Health Clinic of Muskogee.

Brassfield said the club chose Good Shepherd because it is local and all those involved donate their time.

“Nobody gets money out of it,” he said. “Everybody donates their time — doctors, nurses, and the church donates the space.”

Good Shepherd Health Clinic was founded in 2000 as a joint effort by St. Paul United Methodist Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church to provide medical care to individuals and families who lack insurance or health benefits.

Joe Schmidgall, Cruis’n Angels’ president, said the club is the largest continuing contributor to the clinic. The club surprised the clinic last year with its largest contribution yet.

“They were shocked,” Schmidgall said.

Brassfield said he hopes to break the fundraising record this year.

“We always try to achieve more,” he said.

The car show on Saturday is free to attend and $15 to enter. It will have a disc jockey, craft vendors, food vendors, cash prizes and door prizes.

“We’ve got the weenie wagon serving $1 hot dogs and Frito chili pies,” Brassfield said.

The top five vehicles in the show will win a trophy and $100. The top three club awards will win prizes of $25 for third place, $50 for second place, and $100 for first place.

Cruis’n Angels will also have a poker run at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sonic drive-in at York Street and Chandler Road. Proceeds from both events will go to the clinic.
