Workout aims to honor fallen service personnel

Nathan Pennington said this weekend’s memorial workout is a chance for the community to pay back service members who have been killed in combat.

“It’s not very often that we have an opportunity to affect the lives of the families that have lost loved ones,” said Pennington, the owner of CrossFit Muskogee. “This is a great way to pay it back to them.”

In honor of the three Navy SEALs killed in Operation Red Wings on June 28, 2005, an annual memorial workout will take place Saturday.

The workout will unite members of the CrossFit community, not only in Muskogee, but all over the United States.

“We are designated as a host for the event, but this will be going on all over the nation this weekend,” Pennington said.

Participants are requested to donate $10. All donations benefit family members of fallen soldiers.

“The funds go directly towards the families,” Pennington said. “They have this every year for them.”

The movie “Lone Survivor,” starring Mark Wahlberg as Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, is based on the Operation Red Wings mission.

Pennington said anyone at any level of fitness will be able to participate. The memorial workout includes six exercises, with 28 repetitions of each in five rounds.

That translates to doing 28 push-ups, sit-ups, ball slams, walking lunges, dead lifts, and kettle bell swings and then doing each all over again four more times.

“Anybody can get through this,” Pennington said. “We’ll scale back weights, we’ll scale back lifts, we’ll scale back rounds.”   

There will be three different versions of the workout: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

CrossFit Muskogee coaches will be doing the judging, but the competition isn’t the most important part of the workout, Pennington said.

“This isn’t a first place/last place deal,” Pennington said. “It’s more about raising money to help the cause.”

No registration is required, and participants don’t have to be members of the CrossFit Muskogee or any other gym to participate.
