Library offers activities for teens in the spring

The Muskogee Public Library has an abundance of activities for teens this spring including the 2014 Challenge, the Teen Advisory Board, young adult programs, and poster contests.

The 2014 Challenge is a contest which began Jan. 1 and lasts until December. The challenge: read 14 young adult books, read 14 other types of books (CD, Playaway, graphic novel/comic book), join the Teen Advisory Board (and attend at least four meetings), attend 10 teen events in 2014, volunteer in the library four times, and give one submission for the 2014 Teen Summer Newsletter. Young Adult Challenge Champions will be rewarded with a pizza party in December. Prizes will be given to Exceptional Champions.

The Teen Advisory Board is a group of teens and pre-teens who care about their library.

TAB members assist the teen coordinator in planning events, decorate the Teen Zone, and volunteer in the library.

Teens can sign up for the TAB at the Young Adult Desk on the second floor of the library.

Some of the programs we’ll have this year include favorites like movie nights and game days, but we’ll also have practical programs. ACT/SAT prep, college applications, resumes, job applications, and FAFSA are all topics we’ll cover this spring.

“There are a lot of events, so I won’t be bored,” said Gabrielle Brown, 12.

We’ll have parties for Chinese New Year and Cinco de Mayo, as well as an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party.

“I’m most excited about the parties because we get to hang out and make new friends,” said Gabe Ross, 12.

My Favorite Library and Earth Day art contests, and a meditation, yoga, and how-to-life program round out the spring teen events.

“I’m going to the how-to-life program because it tells you what to do in the real world,” said Angel Ross, 13.

The Challenge, Teen Advisory Board, young adult programs and poster contests are open to youths ages 11 to 19.

Schedules of events are in the teen area of the library.
