Asleep at the Wheel brings holiday show to NSU Galaxy of Stars

Western swing paragon Asleep at the Wheel will perform its “Santa Loves to Boogie” concert at 7:30 tonight at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts, 605 N. Grand Ave.

The show is part of Northeastern State University’s Galaxy of Stars Series, presented by the Sequoyah Institute at NSU.

“We are excited to feature Asleep at the Wheel for our holiday show,” Amber Cowan, director of the Galaxy of Stars Series, said in a media release. “We know our patrons will enjoy this western swing twist to the season.”

Asleep at the Wheel is a nine-time Grammy winning western swing band which has enlisted nearly 100 members through 42 years of touring and recording.

Fronting the band since its inception in 1970 is Ray Benson. Other current members are Jason Roberts, David Sanger, David Miller, Dan Walton, Eddie Rivers and Elizabeth McQueen.

Benson was named Texan of the Year and was awarded the Texas Medal of Arts in 2011. In 2008, he was awarded the TEC-Les Paul Award, which recognizes those who creatively apply recording technology.

Roberts has played mandolin for the band since 1994. Sanger has been the drummer since 1986, sans a two-year break during the 1990s. Miller plays bass and joined in 1992. Pianist Walton joined in 2008, Rivers has played steel guitar and saxophone with the band since 2004 and guitarist McQueen joined in 2005.

“Asleep at the Wheel has a reputation as one of the best live acts in the business,’” Cowan said. “The musicians are always outstanding — alumni have gone on to play for such names as Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett and Van Morrison.”

Prices per ticket are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU employees and seniors 60 and over, and $10 for students. Those presenting an NSU student ID are admitted free.

Tickets can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Woods House, 529 Seminary Ave. To reserve tickets call (918) 458-2075.

The Galaxy of Stars series is made possible through the support of the Oklahoma Arts Council, Mid-America Arts Alliance and National Endowment for the Arts.
