Release date set for local woman’s soul food cookbook

From staff reports

Cassandra Gaines is releasing her cook book, “Momma C’s Soul Food Cookbook,” at a book signing and demonstration during the Essence Festival in New Orleans on July 7, according to a media release.

Gaines will have two book signings in Muskogee in July.

Gaines will sign her cookbook at Sweet N Sassy on North Main Street on July 13 and Runt’s Barbecue on West Okmulgee on July 24.

With the publication of her cookbook, Gaines said she is fulfilling one of her lifelong dreams.

The book will be sold with a DVD for beginner cooks who need a little more help to learn how to cook soul food the healthy way.

The DVD was produced locally by Oxford Productions.

Gaines recently was featured in the January 2013 premiere of the award-winning national PBS documentary, “Soul Food Junkies.”

Gaines is the Multi-Cultural Director for convention and tourism in Muskogee.

Gaines launched “The National Soul Food Cook- Off” in 2008 in eight states.

She hosts the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Soul Food Cook-Off Competition in Muskogee.

“Soul food cooking is about reaching out to communities and showcasing your signature dishes,” Gaines said. “We all know that Big Momma, uncle or cousin who can throw down a mean plate of collard greens or that mouthwatering fried chicken.”
