Library has classes available for adults to improve literacy

This is the time of year when many like to cozy up in a comfy chair with a warm drink and read their favorite novel.

Can’t you just picture yourself wrapped up in a blanket solving the latest Stephanie Plum mystery by Janet Evanovich, or reading the great American novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald? Maybe your favorite reading time is when you are all snuggled up with your children reading “I’m a Frog!” from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.

For many adults, cuddling up with a good book cannot take place. Their reading skills will not allow them to share a special reading time with their children or have a quiet moment to themselves drifting away to another world. It is even difficult for them to read the newspaper or fill out forms.

The Adult Literacy Department at Muskogee Public Library offers opportunities for adults 18 and older to increase their reading skills, study for their GED or U.S. citizenship tests, become more proficient with the English language or improve their math ability. The adult students come with a purpose and are eager to increase their knowledge so they can become more confident and successful in work, education, family, and society. The literacy department has adept tutors who assist the adult students in reaching their goals as well as skilled librarians who support learning efforts.

All classes offered at Muskogee Public Library in the Adult Literacy Department are free, confidential and are held at the library, a place of safety, friendship, respect, and privacy.

For more information about enrolling as a student or becoming a tutor call Penny Chastain at (918) 682-6657, ext. 246.

Penny Chastain is the adult literacy coordinator for the Muskogee Public Library.
