MCT opens 'Seussical the Musical'

— If you’ve ever wanted to hear a Who or get an up-close look at the Cat in the Hat, this weekend is your chance.

Muskogee Children’s Theatre is performing “Seussical the Musical” at the Ben Franklin Science Academy tonight, Saturday and Sunday.

Charles Dennison and Brooklyn Wheeler, both Muskogee High School freshmen, are both playing the role of the Cat in the Hat.

“I think this is going to be fun and exciting,” Brooklyn said. “All of the kids have tried hard and put their blood, sweat and tears into this. We really want people to come out and see it.”

The musical combines several Dr. Seuss stories, including “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Yertle the Turtle.” The MCT production features more than 40 actors and singers, most of them younger kids placed on the front row.

Charles said one of the biggest challenges of the musical was working with the young ones.

“It can be difficult working with younger kids,” he said. “They tend to get preoccupied easily.”

Brooklyn agreed but also said the experience was rewarding.

“I like to teach them the dance moves,” she said. “I know they look up to us.”

For Charles, this is his second production in just six months. He starred in a Muskogee High Repertory Theater production of “12 Angry People” last year.

He said acting isn’t a career goal for him, but it is a hobby he enjoys.

“I just like being able to be someone else on stage,” he said. “I’m used to dramas, but I thought I’d try something different and do a musical.”

Brooklyn said she would like to pursue acting as a possible career but has a backup plan to be a psychologist.

Kat Trueblood, the MHRT leader, is directing the musical.

Brooklyn said Trueblood was “great to work with.”

The freshmen are working on their next productions, Brooklyn at the Muskogee Little Theatre and Charles with MHRT on a possible adaptation of “On Golden Pond.”
