Library card gives you a bang for your bucks

— Among all the plastic cards you carry in your wallet, do you have the “Smartest Card,” a library card? If you do not have the “Smartest Card” you need to get one. You can get a card at Muskogee Public Library or any other of the 15 branches of Eastern Oklahoma District Library System (EODLS). To get your library card you must have some form of identification that shows your current address and fill out the application at one of the libraries.

If you do not live in one of the six EODLS counties (Muskogee, McIntosh, Cherokee, Adair, Sequoyah, Delaware) the card costs $10 a year. The reason for the charge for out-of-district cards is because the library system is funded by property tax and we only receive property tax money from the six counties.

The library card is a passport to infinite resources and summer is a great time to have a library card. You can get books, e-books, audiobooks, or downloadable audio books to take on vacation. You can take a fun class through Universal Class, an online course offering that the library has paid for and makes available through our website, or learn a new language again through an on-line program, Mango.

You can get books from the children’s department and have special reading time with you kids, maybe have a family book club. If you want to have a nostalgic old TV show or movie night, check out our DVD collection. Maybe you want to join our craft class or participate in all the activities and events that are a part of the Summer Reading Program, which is open to all ages. If you want to learn a new computer skill or more about your new smart phone then Book a Librarian is perfect for you. If you need consumer product information, home decorating ideas, tips for writing the great American novel, travel information or just something that is fun then a library card is the card for you.

Yes, the library card is a great value. According to the American Library Association (ALA) your library card can yield up to 10 times its value. To quote from an ALA news release, “Libraries are among the most effective of all public services, serving two-thirds of the population with less than 2 percent of all tax dollars.”

Again according to the ALA article: “Studies have shown that children who are read to in the home and use library services perform better in school…”

Therefore, if you don’t have the “Smartest Card” hurry down to Muskogee Public Library tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and get one; you will be glad you did.

Jan Bryant is the head librarian at the Muskogee Public Library. Reach her at (918) 682-6657, Ext. 223 or ljanbryant@eok.lib.ok.us.
