Quilt show blooms Saturday

“A Garden of Quilts” is the theme for the Muskogee Area Quilters Guild 26th annual Quilt Show 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Admission is $4. Lunch will be available from the United Methodist Women.

The show will have more than 150 quilts displayed with quilts entered from all over Oklahoma, and as far away as California. The Muskogee show has grown into one of the largest quilt shows in the state. There are more than 12 categories of quilts displayed this year.

“I'm so proud of our guild members for the wonderful show they put together,” said Joanne Nilsson, guild president. “It’s a labor of love, just like making a quilt!”

The Muskogee guild members provide their “labor of love” all year through their “Reaching Out” program.

Quilters meet each month to make donation quilts to be given to various crisis intervention organizations and youth groups in the area. The result is hundreds of quilts each year being given to children in need. The quilt show is the main support for this program.

Professional judge, pattern designer, and quilting instructor Alice Wilhoit of McKinney, Texas, will be judging the entries this year.

“We are thrilled to have Alice lend her expertise to our quilters,” said Jan McFarland, entry coordinator.

Wilhoit has been a quilting instructor for more than 20 years and enjoys teaching beginning quilters. She also has a book published by the American Quilter’s Society titled “Crazy Patchwork.”

“Our quilters always learn new things when they enter a quilt in the show and have it judged professionally, it’s a lot of fun,” McFarland said.

The show has many activities planned in addition to the quilt displays. There will be demonstrations of quilting techniques, vendors with colorful fabrics and quilting supplies for sale, and a silent auction of small quilts, with miniature quilts and wall hangings made by guild members up for auction.

This is in addition to one of the highlights of every show, the raffle quilt to be given away on Saturday afternoon.

Tickets for the quilt will be on sale throughout both days and the winner does not need to be present to win.
