Book club starts Jan. 19 at MPL

It may not be the end of the world for us, but Suzanne Collins depicts a pretty bleak future in her epic series entitled “The Hunger Games.”  With a power-hungry capital, a yearly battle to the death, and a memorable cast of characters, the books take the reader on an incredible journey of love, betrayal, and survival.  The first installment was recently made into a blockbuster movie and the excitement about the series shows no signs of slowing down.

Taking place in a totalitarian nation called Panem, the book follows the story of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl who volunteers to take the place of her younger sister in the brutal annual event called the Hunger Games.  She and Peeta Mellark, a fellow “tribute,” enter the games with 22 others and a “last-man-standing” attitude.  In preparation for the games, however, Katniss and Peeta discover there’s more to the games than meets the eye.

In creating the story, the author draws on Greek mythology, reality TV and a host of social issues to paint a dark and violent picture brightened by themes of hope and self-sacrifice.  Readers have also commented that themes such as government control, personal independence, and even the passion of Christ are prevalent throughout the book.

The “Based on the Book” club will be discussing the series’ first book, “The Hunger Games,” at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19.  The group will discuss the story, events, and characters as well as its many themes and commentaries.  There will also be a movie presentation during the meeting and free popcorn and drinks.
