New CD dedicated to late friend

— The older you get, the more you appreciate your family and friends.

That’s how John Fabian feels about his fourth CD, “In 3D,” being released this week. He’ll introduce it at a CD release party at 8 p.m. Saturday at Muskogee Country Club. It is open to the public at no cost.

Fabian is dedicating the CD to the memory of his friend Glenna Kay Eisert. They met in school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and continued their friendship for life. She was an avid photographer and shared a photo with him that she took in a forest. Fabian’s photo was added to the forest photo for the CD cover, making it look three-dimensional.

Eisert enjoyed taking photos of bands and had taken numerous photos of Fabian and his band, Bluefish. She came to his last CD release party two years ago telling him she didn’t feel well but wasn’t sure why. She died less than a month later from cancer.

“She was such a sweet lady,” Fabian said.

His friend and musician, Zach Swon, did all the instrumentation, arranging and producing the CD. It took them a year because of Swon’s own musical career going back and forth from Nashville.

At the weekend party, Fabian will be backed by Bluefish. It includes Shane Curtis, Jim Loftin and Daniel Williams. Curtis, Loftin and Fabian have been playing together for 25 years. During the concert, Fabian’s son, Corey, and Eddie Lienhart will play “a couple of songs,” he said.

“You’ll hear rhythm and blues, a little rock ’n’ roll and a touch of country for the first time,” he said.

The CD has 10 songs. Fabian’s favorite is “Closer To You.” He heard the song in the movie “Everybody’s All-American,” starring Dennis Quaid.

“It’s in the background of a love scene,” he said.

There are songs about fishing — the country song — and one called “Change” with music from a mandolin. There is a song about TV evangelists that has a touch of humor. He’ll also play songs from all four of his CDs.

“People will just want to come out and dance and have a good time,” he said. “This is not the same old country club.”

Fabian is excited to be playing at Muskogee Country Club. The club’s food and beverage manager, Mike Hebb, is hoping to get more live music acts at the club.

Fabian said, “It’s nice to see the Country Club is supporting local musicians.”

He’s gotten support from people in Germany, too, where he’s sold more than 600 CDs in five years by word of mouth.

“American blues over there is so big,” he said. “People over there like underground blues artists. It’s hard to believe people in Germany are listening to an Okie from Muskogee.”

Fabian has friends and family coming to hear him Saturday and he hopes everyone that wants to have a good time will come, too.

“I’m really proud of this one,” he said. “At 58 years old, I’m just proud I’m still able to do it.”
