Muskogee Civitan Club honors clergy

Muskogee Civitan Club is honoring local clergy during Clergy Appreciation Week Sunday to Feb. 9.

Don Garrison, president of the club, said the club will recognize clergy of all faiths during its Feb. 5 luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Special guests will include: Dr. Robert Duncan, Mayor Wren Stratton, Dr. Lance Sawyer, the Rev. B. W. Nobles, the Rev. Bryan Brooks, the Rev. Wayne Schuett, the Rev. Kirk Woodliff, Dr. Don Jones, Clint Hayes, Rex Wilkinson, Glen Carman, the Rev. Tom Herrington, Greg Sinclair, Jon Ward, Eric Fletcher, the Rev. Thea McKee, James McCracken, Darren Dix, John Derr, Curtis Barrett, the Rev. Ray Gaines, Captains George and Robin Hackbarth, the Rev. Kevin Tully, pastor Denver Callahan, David Kelley, Rafael Osorio, Gary McKeen, Claudio Valencia, and the Rev. David Lee Ragsdale Jr.

Dr. Robert J. Duncan Jr., president of Bacone College, will be guest speaker and Stratton will present the proclamation.

Clergy Appreciation Week began as a commemoration of the death of four military chaplains during World War II who were aboard the troopship, the U.S.S. Dorchester. The ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic and the chaplains helped to quiet the soldiers, finally giving their lives when they gave their life jackets to soldiers.

“This time is set aside each year to remember this heroic deed and pay tribute to all clergy who dedicate themselves to making this a better world,” Garrison said.

The Muskogee club is part of a worldwide civic service organization dedicated to helping the developmentally disabled both locally and through their International Research Center in Birmingham, Ala.
