Cherokees pick ambassadors

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee Immersion School eighth-grader Sinihele Rhoades’ traditional story of the Cherokee water spider in both an English and Cherokee translation earned her the title of Little Cherokee Ambassador.

Sixteen Cherokee youth competed in the Little Cherokee Ambassador competition at Sequoyah Schools’ gym.

Rhoades, 11, correctly answered that a statue of Sequoyah is on display at the U.S. Capitol, and that in 1825 New Echota was established as the Cherokee Capitol, to take her crown and sash in the 10-12 age division.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Rhoades, who won the title twice before in the younger age divisions, said in a media release. “I think being a Little Cherokee Ambassador is about being someone people can look up to, who can speak in public and represent the Cherokee Nation well.”

Winning in the 4-6 age division was Alexis Snell, 6, and Chujah Flute, 4, both students at Cherokee Immersion Charter School.Miah Summerfield, 8, a Salina Elementary student, and Nathan Lowrey, 8, a Greenwood Elementary School student in Tahlequah, took the 7-9 age division.

The ambassadors accompany Miss Cherokee and Jr. Miss Cherokee to sponsored events and for the next year act as representatives of the tribe.
