TCP puts fun in fundraiser

— TAHLEQUAH — California native Shawn Arthur is bringing a little Broadway musical theater with a taste of the musical comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone” for Fabulous Forties Follies.

The fundraiser for Tahlequah Community Playhouse Inc. will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Tahlequah. The cost is $10 at the door. The event, celebrating the 40th anniversary of TCP, features music from the fall musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” and other singers and dancers. Tea, coffee, wine and homemade desserts will be available.

Arthur, the TCP board president, is the director and star of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” which is in rehearsals. He said proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward royalties and expenses for this year’s productions, which include:

• “The Drowsy Chaperone,” Sept. 20-22 and 27-29.

• “Blithe Spirit,” Nov. 15-17 and Nov. 22-24.

• “Don’t Mention My Name,” Feb. 14-16 and 21-23.

• “Nunsense: The Megamusical,” April 2-4 and 11-13.

Ron Goossen, a past president of TCP, said this is the second year for the group to do a fundraiser.

“We have two musicals this year,” he said. “It can get pretty expensive with royalties.”

Goossen will sing at the fundraiser, as will others including Seth Arnold, a senior vocal performance major at Northeastern State University who worked with the Tulsa Opera chorus; Janet Van De Graff; and Dr. Tracey Childers and Dr. Shannon Unger, who are professors at NSU.

Arthur, who moved to Tahlequah from Los Angeles three years ago because he wanted to slow down, fell in love with the town. He is enthusiastic about the fundraiser.

“I’ve done theater since I was young and am trained in classical piano,” he said. “We are actively working to move TCP forward.”

He’s brought in Chantz Ward, a choreographer from Southern California, for “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

“We’re moving and growing, working hard, singing and dancing,” he said.

The music to be performed at the fundraiser includes selections from “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “West Side Story” and “Wicked.”
