Heritage Days coming Saturday

By Travis Sloat
Phoenix Correspondent

— History and family fun will be combined this weekend in Muskogee.

“Heritage Days: A Living History Festival” will be held today and Saturday in the Depot District of Muskogee near Third and Elgin streets.

The Fall Arts Festival will be held Saturday at the Muskogee Civic Center.

The Bass Reeves Legacy Trail Walking Tour will kick off Heritage Days at 5:30 p.m. today. Participants will walk in the footsteps of the famous African-American lawman Bass Reeves. There will be costumed interpreters along the way to relate the historic events of his life.

Space for this event is limited, and reservations are encouraged. The cost will be $15. For information, visit www.downtownmuskogee.com or call (918) 683-2400.

Live reenactments, live music, authentic chuck wagon style food, western crafts, and outhouse races will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

A “Parade of Thrones” will be held at noon where participants will have the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice in the most creative and best-decorated outhouse. Those wishing to enter an outhouse in the competition may use whatever they want to construct it, with no weight requirements.

The Muskogee Area Arts Council, Inc. will sponsor the Fall Arts Festival and provide booth space under the covered parking lot for artists to display and sell their art.

The cost for a single space is $10, and double spaces will cost $20.

For information, call (918) 348-9641 or email muskogeeartscouncil@gmail.com.
