Home on itinerary for Christmas tour

Clyde Odom, 7, and Ira Odom, 11, came from their home near Eufaula to help their grandmother Leslie Newhouse get ready for the 21st annual Holiday Candlelight Tour.

Their great-grandmother Lola Scivally of Muskogee came too, but just for moral support. The tour benefits the Kelly B. Todd Cerebral Palsy and Neuro-Muscular Center. It will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday. Advance tickets are $25, which includes food and entertainment.

Newhouse’s gold stucco home at 117 S. 14th St. is trimmed in lights. Greenery and red ribbons frame the front entrance. Newhouse and her husband, Jimmy, are spending their third Christmas in the home they love. Built in 1920, the Mediterranean-style home is known as “the old Rowsey house,” after the family that once owned it. Its 4,800 square feet offer plenty of room for family and for people to eat and mingle during the tour. Newhouse said she is opening her home to benefit the children from the area who receive physical therapy at the center.

“Christmas was always big for us,” Newhouse said. “We had big family gatherings. We used to go and spend the whole day.”

Scivally had the family at her home for Thanksgiving. Newhouse will be the host of the family Christmas gathering.

“All my recipes are my mother’s,” Newhouse said. “She’s a wonderful cook.”

Those recipes will be served on her newest furniture — a Michael Amini After Eight Collection black-and-silver leather dining room group. That’s where one of her four large Christmas trees stands decorated in silver bows and balls.

“She’s very talented,” Scivally said. “Leslie is a good decorator.”

The formal dining room is elegant with red and gold crown molding and pocket doors. The walls are gold leaf paint. It has a fireplace with gas logs. The fireplace is one of seven in the home — four downstairs and three upstairs.

Across from the formal dining room is the formal living room. It also has a tall Christmas tree, which reaches the beamed ceiling. The ornaments are a mixture of family memories and travel mementos. A silver rug is in front of the champagne- colored sofa. A large copper pineapple is framed on the wall. There are pineapples throughout the home decor. New to the room is a painting of a woman in a black ball gown with crystals in it. Always looking for unique things to include in her home, Newhouse found it in Elk City at the Country Dove Tea Room.

“It reminded me of this house,” she said.

The twinkle of the crystals match those of the new crystal chandeliers she found at the Lighting Emporium in Bethel Heights, Ark. The fireplace mantle is topped with black and silver glittery ribbon, balls and butterflies.

Around the corner is the powder room with a poinsettia tree with fiber optics. The room is spacious with a marble fireplace and sitting area.

The kitchen has a contemporary white and chrome oval dining table with a glass top. Above the table is a contemporary light fixture of large chrome chains. Shelves behind the table hold the white dishes that Newhouse bought in Dubai, where they lived for a couple of years.

On the upper floor, which is accessible by elevator or stairs, are three bedrooms. The stairs’ banister is trimmed in black and silver glitter. The master suite is large with a sitting area in front of a fireplace. It features a Hollywood Swank bed by Michael Amini in a leather champagne color adorned in crystals. The room is accented in animal prints. Clear glass balls and black ornaments adorn the fireplace and the chandelier for the holidays.

The grandchildren’s bedroom or guest room has a large tree with balls and ornaments in shades of blue, brown and purple. As Newhouse gave a tour of the home, Clyde was quick to point out that he plugged in all the tree lights while Ira just played on the computer.
