Linda Calloway of Muskogee is always doodling. She thinks her pen- and-ink drawings look like tattoos. She’ll bring these black-and-white doodles of swirling flowers to coiled snakes to Arts on the Avenue today and Saturday at the Cherokee Capitol Square in downtown Tahlequah.
If you want a little more color in your artwork, Monica Brown of Tahlequah was the People’s Choice winner with her painting “Junk Horses” at last year’s Arts on the Avenue. The artwork was used in this year’s poster for the event.
She is a member of the Tahlequah City Firsts committee that has planned the event. It has a festival atmosphere with tents, food vendors and wine tasting from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. A special ticket is required for this event.
Calloway, the secretary of the Muskogee Art Guild, said about eight guild members will bring their works to the festival for show and sale. It’s a good way to make contacts. Members Barbara and Polly Moore will have silversmithing, and Jim Roaix is bringing soap stone carving.
Also to be displayed are jewelry, paintings, pottery, woodcarvings and sculptures, beadwork, baskets and photography by artists from throughout the region.
Brown will offer prints of her painting of her horse, Nikkie, who died at age 36. Making the painting helped her get through her grief. She said she knows how to paint horses, from their bone structure to their muscles.
“You can tell a lot about people from their eyes, but with a horse, it’s the ears,” she said.
Arts on the Avenue will also have live performances, from bands to dancers, every hour. The kids can go on a photo walk at 2 p.m. today and 11 a.m. Saturday.
Brown said the purpose of the art festival is to bring more people to Tahlequah while sharing its beauty.
