MAAC kicks off photo, art contest

— When Mayor Bob Coburn made his State of the City address in September 2012, he called for a community image change.

David Jones said he and the Muskogee Area Arts Council are out to do just that.

“Mayor Coburn came to me and asked if we could have a photo contest that focused on Muskogee,” Jones said. “We felt like that was a little restrictive, so we came up with the idea for Muskogee’s past and future.”

The MAAC is accepting entries to the “Muskogee Paradigm: Echoes of the Past and Visions for the Future” photo and art contest. Entries will be accepted until March 1.

The MAAC is looking for images of positive new developments that show the community moving forward into a brighter future.

Jones, the president of the MAAC, said this is a chance to show some of the rich heritage in Muskogee.

“It’s a way for people to see Muskogee is growing,” he said. “It’s a way to show some of the beautification of the town, and we also want to give local artists and photographers some extra exposure. We have a lot of talent in this town, but it is hidden.”

The winning photographs and paintings will be chosen based on originality and overall quality by a panel of judges. Prizes will be awarded in past and future categories, and adult and youth divisions.

Those interested in entering can e-mail their images to Jonita Mullins at muskogeemainstreet@gmail.com, but they must also print an 8x10 copy of their work to be displayed at the Severs Building on May 4 as part of the Historic Tours event.

Jones said he’s already taken care to exclude himself as one of the judges.

“I’ve already taken several pictures,” he said. “I’m a member of the Shutterbugs Club and an avid photographer, so it would have been difficult for me not to enter this contest. I’m excited about what this will do for the city of Muskogee.”
