Become a tutor at the public library

Make a difference. Change a life. Be a tutor. You may have seen these three short sentences before on the back of a bookmark from the Muskogee Public Library or on information about the Adult Literacy Department at the library.

Yes, they are just three short sentences that may or may not seem important, but if you have ever been a tutor, you understand how much meaning those three sentences have.

Tutors are helping adult learners work toward goals that will truly change their lives. Tutors in the Adult Literacy Department have helped adult learners prepare for and pass their GED test, U.S. Citizenship test, college algebra and more.

They have worked with students on reading and writing and watch as the students become proud of their accomplishments. They have seen students who had no confidence in their abilities gain that confidence and are now expanding their knowledge in other areas such as music, art, and writing.

Tutors have witnessed significant gains in many subjects, including reading, math, writing and other areas.

Tutors are definitely making a difference and changing lives.

Have you thought about being a tutor? Do you wonder if you qualify or have the experience needed?

You are required to have a high school diploma or GED and be 21 years of age or older. You also need to speak English proficiently and be able to attend the tutor training classes at Muskogee Public Library.

If you meet these requirements and have a desire in your heart to work with a learner towards their goals which will truly help change their lives, then you qualify.

If you would like more information about becoming a tutor for the Adult Literacy Department at Muskogee Public Library, contact Muskogee Public Library Adult Literacy Coordinator Penny Chastain at (918) 682-6657, Ext. 246.
