‘Goodreads’ largest social cataloging website for readers

— Do you have little notes lying around of book titles that you don’t want to forget about or notebooks with lists of books you’ve read or want to read? You’ve heard the saying, “so many books and so little time”. Well, there is a website that will help you with organizing your reading so you can enjoy those reads when you do have the time.

Goodreads.com is a social cataloging website where you can create your own shelves and reading lists as well as find, discuss and share books with your friends. Just register to create an account so you can get all the benefits of this growing community of readers. As of July 2012, 10 million members had registered and rated about 330 million books, making Goodreads the largest social site for readers.

A star rating system and written review will guide you if you’re looking for a certain book and really want to know how other readers feel about it. You can also add friends and suggest books to them and message that friend.

Now that you have all your books organized, you may want to join a group. Click on Groups at the top of the page to choose from the list and start sharing your reading interests and participate in discussions. There is also a Recommendations section that shows other books you might be interested in based on your book shelves.

In the Explore section you’ll find Listopia, which has book lists, and your own created lists. You can enter to win a giveaway of prerelease books by publishers and authors, of which some are signed by the author. The most recently published books are found on the popular list.

Goodreads Voice shows new books, live video chats with featured authors, author interviews, blog posts, ebooks to download in different formats and other tidbits of interest to keep you up-to-date on what’s going on in the world of books.

Just for fun, you’ll find trivia, popular quotes and book quizzes. You can even make your own quizzes of books you’ve read, which could be used in a book discussion group.

The Community section has a creative writing forum where you can add your own writings, such as short stories, poetry, chapters of a book, or even whole books. You can also read other members writings across many genres and categories.

Now it’s time to have fun exploring Goodreads and finding all the helpful features of this growing social website for readers. As always, if you have any questions about this website or need to check out or request a certain book to add to your newly organized shelves of books in Goodreads, just call the Muskogee Public Library at 918-682-6657. Our helpful, knowledgeable staff will do our best to help you with your reading needs.

Christe Blacklett is a library clerk at the Muskogee Public Libary.
